Insider Breach, Email Attacks Net $1.7M in HIPAA Fines

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has fined a pain management firm and a pediatric hospital more than $1.7 million for HIPAA violations impacting approximately 50,000 individuals. Infractions stemmed from an insider breach at Florida-based Gulf Coast Pain Consultants and an email breach at Children’s Hospital of Colorado. The OCR determined both entities had failed to follow HIPAA guidelines, resulting in unauthorised access to protected health information.
