A new study suggests that opioids can be used to alleviate physical pain without risking addiction. The research involved using a drug called an MAGL inhibitor, which increased a particular endocannabinoid in mice’s brains. The drug reduced the rewarding, addictive properties of opioids while maintaining their painkilling effects. Although the research is preliminary, if replicated in humans, it could vastly change pain treatment and potentially help address the opioid epidemic.
