A cyberattack targeting Sri Lanka’s government domain (gov.lk) resulted in the loss of numerous emails from the President’s Office, Cabinet Office, among other state institutions. The hack, identified as a ransomware attack, encrypted emails which prompted a ransom demand to restore access. Data recovery efforts were largely unsuccessful due to outdated and unsafe systems. Sri Lanka’s ICTA claims this could have been avoided if timely system updates had been approved.
