Hunger cells’ ECM link to diabetes and obesity uncovered

A study published in Nature details a new mechanism that links hypothalamic inflammation to metabolic dysfunction. Researchers discovered that the buildup of extracellular matrix proteins and sugars around hunger-regulating neurons prevents insulin from effectively managing the body’s metabolism, leading to obesity. Subsequently, drugs that prevent or counteract this buildup can potentially help to improve metabolic function, thus reducing body weight.
