Human error to blame in Ascension data breach that impacted 5.6 million patients

US healthcare firm Ascension revealed that personal and medical data of 5.6 million people were exposed in a cyber attack earlier in 2024. The attack forced the company to postpone surgeries and appointments, and reportedly caused a significant drop in patient volume. This follows the Change Healthcare attack that compromised the data of 100 million Americans. The breach was found to have been caused by a cyber criminal tricking an employee into downloading a malicious file.
