How Racial Disparities Affect Outcomes

Treatment options for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, have improved over the past two decades, increasing survival rates. However, the success of treatment varies according to factors such as age, overall health, stage of cancer, and type of treatment. Socioeconomic factors and racial disparities also affect treatment outcomes. Statistics show myeloma is twice as common in Black people compared to white people, with healthcare inequity being a major factor. Improving awareness and routine screenings for at-risk individuals, along with equal treatment, are seen as key to improving survival rates.
