How macOS’s XProtect scans for and detects viruses

XProtect is a MacOS feature that safeguards the user’s Mac against viruses and malware. It operates in the background, monitoring downloaded apps for known malware signatures. XProtect is interactively involved in the Apple notarization process, ensuring third-party apps released outside of the Mac App Store are safe. If suspicious activity is detected, Apple can revoke Developer ID certificates, issue notarization revocation tickets, and update XProtect signatures for further protection.
