Blockchain technology has significant potential for use in healthcare, but it is not a cure-all solution. One area where blockchain can offer support is in patient matching, or identifying the same patient across different information systems. However, a universal patient ID is needed for blockchain to be effective, and there are many challenges to achieving this. Blockchain can also be used to track unique patient identifiers and update patient records. Despite the technical capability of blockchain, the biggest challenge lies in changing patients’ mindsets and building trust in the technology.
