The increasing homelessness in Canada, caused by a financialized housing market and rising inflation, is overwhelming the country’s emergency departments (EDs). As homelessness can cause health problems, EDs play a vital role in supporting these individuals. However, a better solution could be to prescribe housing as a social prescription. This would not only address the root social determinant of health but also alleviate pressure on EDs. Providing permanent housing to those struggling with homelessness reduces ED visits, hospitalizations and improves overall health.
