HIV-positive organ transplants allowed under new rule

The Biden administration has sanctioned a change in transplant rules, allowing HIV-infected individuals to receive kidneys and livers from equally infected donors. The rule eliminates the former requirement for such transplants to be part of clinical research. The Department of Health and Human Services supports the change, hoping it will increase the pool of available organs and decrease stigma towards HIV. The only organs currently covered are kidneys and livers.
