HIPAA to be updated with cybersecurity regulations, White House says

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will propose new cybersecurity rules under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). These updated regulations, the first in over a decade, will require healthcare entities to encrypt user data and enhance network monitoring for cybersecurity threats, costing the sector an estimated $9bn in the first year. The move follows significant ransomware attacks on Change Healthcare and the Ascension Hospital network.
