HIPAA audits not effective at improving cybersecurity: OIG

The Office for Civil Rights’ (OCR) audits of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) enforcement are ineffective and too narrow in scope, according to a report by the Office of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG recommends expanding the audit program, defining compliance review criteria and setting performance metrics. However, the OCR highlighted budget restrictions and staff shortages as challenges to implementing these suggestions.
