HHS announces first ransomware settlement

Doctors’ Management Services will pay a $100,000 settlement following a ransomware attack that violated HIPAA rules. The Massachusetts-based firm failed to identify system vulnerabilities, which resulted in a breach impacting over 206k individuals in 2017. As healthcare data breaches rise alongside increased reliance on electronic records, the HHS requires companies to identify, address, and train staff in cybersecurity vulnerabilities, given the steep costs of system disruptions.
