Healthcare groups cheer Senate progress on national patient ID

The US Senate has removed language preventing innovation in national patient identification from its appropriations bill. Stakeholders in the health industry, including HIMSS, are applauding the move and advocating for further progress in solving the issue of interoperability. The group Patient ID Now is pushing for the removal of the ban, which has been in place for over 20 years, and has emphasized the challenges caused by patient misidentification during the COVID-19 pandemic. HIMSS President & CEO Hal Wolf called on Congress to repeal the ban and develop a national patient identification strategy.
