Health privacy laws and potential risks to patients after 23andMe data breach

23andMe, a consumer genetics testing firm, was recently targeted by hackers who accessed genetic information from certain user profiles that had opted into the “DNA Relatives” feature. The hack targeted millions of data points from Ashkenazi Jewish users and users of Chinese heritage. It is currently unclear whether these groups were specifically unique to the data breach. The breached data is now allegedly being sold on the dark web, raising questions about privacy standards and the potential uses of the accessible information.
