The healthcare data of around 1 in 3 Americans were affected by hacks in 2023, mainly carried out by organized criminals targeting health providers and vendors who serve them. This includes the HCA Healthcare hack, the largest of the year, compromising over 11 million patient records. Many victims found their details on dark web forums, received unexplained medical bills and fraudulent charges, leading to potential class action lawsuits against HCA. The industry is seeing an increasing number of such attacks, with an average of two every day last year.
