Hacker free-for-all fights for control of home and office routers everywhere

Cybercriminals and government-backed hackers are covertly sharing and using compromised routers to carry out their activities. In some cases, these groups are even trading access to already breached routers. This collaborative approach blurs the line between financially motivated cybercrime and nation-state espionage. This high-risk cyber ecosystem was unveiled by researchers from security firm Trend Micro, citing the example of Russian hackers exploiting an already-infected network of EdgeRouter devices for cyber espionage, after the initial infection was driven by financial motives.
