Gut bacteria can metabolise carcinogens and cause them to accumulate in distant organs, leading to tumour development, researchers from the University of Split, Croatia, have discovered. The study revealed marked reduction in the development of urinary bladder cancer when mice treated with antibiotics to wipe out gut bacteria were exposed to N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine – a carcinogenic chemical in tobacco smoke.
