The European Data Protection Board has ordered Google to conduct a full assessment of the data protection requirements and privacy implications of its acquisition of Fitbit. Concerns have been raised about the privacy implications of merging obligations under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Both Google and Fitbit are being urged to mitigate possible risks to privacy and data protection before notifying the merger to the European Commission. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office and the US Department of Justice are also looking into privacy concerns surrounding the deal.
