The discovery allows more accurate diagnostic tests and customised treatments against Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria behind Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease globally. It also offers insights into the evolution of these bacteria and the potential for non-disease-causing variants to become harmful in the future.
