Fruit fly study reveals potential trigger for growth cessation

Scientists from the University of Illinois Chicago have found a potential trigger that causes fruit flies to stop growing, which could improve our understanding of human development. The new research contradicts the theory that fruit flies cease growing upon reaching a certain size, demonstrating that it is related to the production of a steroid hormone called ecdysone, regulated by nutritional information in the gland of the larva. Similar research in mammals could shed light on the process in humans.
