Former Health NZ IT worker ‘not surprised’ at data breach

A former IT staffer has warned that many IT systems in New Zealand’s health sector are vulnerable to attacks due to staff shortages and deferred updates. This follows an October data breach at Health NZ involving sensitive staff data. Health NZ has refused to confirm whether the breach was caused by an external hacker or an insider. An ongoing police cyber-crime unit investigation is expected to result in charges being laid.
