Researchers discovered a vulnerability in ESET’s cybersecurity software that could be exploited by state-backed hackers to secretly infect devices with malicious code. The flaw allows for a malicious dynamic-link library (DLL) to be planted and executed through the ESET antivirus scanner, running undetected in the background. ESET has since confirmed and fixed the flaw. The hacker group ToddyCat, known for targeting government and military organisations, is suspected to be behind this exploit.
