Surgeons at NYU Langone Health have performed the first-ever combined heart pump implant and pig kidney transplant on a terminally ill patient. The operation on Lisa Pisano, who had heart failure and end-stage kidney disease, was carried out in two stages over nine days. Pisano is the first patient with a mechanical heart pump to receive an organ transplant and the second person to receive a gene-edited pig kidney transplant.
