Experiences of Adults Who Have Been Incarcerated: Findings from the KFF Survey on Racism, Discrimination, and Health

The KFF survey shows previously incarcerated people face significant health needs, social isolation, and financial struggles. Many struggle to afford living expenses, especially lower-income individuals, women, and Black adults. 61% lack a strong social support network. Access to healthcare is limited, with 22% lacking a usual source of care or using the emergency room when sick. Mental health issues are common, especially amongst women, with a lack of access to necessary services.
