Employee error exposed data of 16,000 Blue Cross patients online for 3 months

Philadelphia-based health insurer Independence Blue Cross is notifying 16,762 patients that their data was exposed online for several months after an employee uploaded a member file to a public-facing website. The breach occurred between April 23 and July 20 and included names, dates of birth, diagnoses, and provider details. The company has removed the file and taken action against the employee responsible. No Social Security numbers, financial data, or credit card information was exposed. This incident highlights the importance of proper access controls and network monitoring to prevent data breaches.
