Diabetes, Hormone Disorder Drugs Could Be Derived from Deadly Sea Snail Toxin

A cone snail venom toxin, dubbed consomatin, closely mimics the human hormone somatostatin and could act as a promising blueprint for targeted drugs, according to a study by the University of Utah. Researchers noted that consomatin’s fine-tuned targeting and long-lasting effects could inform the creation of new drugs to treat endocrine disorders. The highly venomous marine cone snail species creates a variety of peptides termed “doppelgängers” that mimic hormones.
