Despite Declining Use, Medicaid Spending on Prescription Drugs Has Increased

Although the number of Medicaid prescription drug orders has decreased in recent years, Medicaid spending on such drugs has increased, largely due to high-cost brand drugs. From 2017 to 2022, net spending on Medicaid prescriptions rose by 47%. Federal measures are being introduced to mitigate high prescription costs, including the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act and initiatives to improve price transparency.
