DataBreaches.Net Reports a More Than 700% Increase in Credential Phishing Attacks

Alright then, mates, let’s have a bit of chinwag about phishing and the trouble it’s been stirring up of late. I don’t mean those gentle emails promising you’ve won the lottery (if only!), but the more sinister kind that could leave your organisation wide open to cyberattacks.

In the second half of 2024 alone there was a shocking 703% increase in cyber breaches due to credential theft attacks, so this is not a small problem at all, I tell you. And if you thought emails were harmless, think again! There was a jaw-dropping 202% increase in email-based threats.

Believe it or not, every week, the average Joe is very likely to receive at least one phishing link that’s way too smart for traditional network security controls. It’s crucial we recognise this because when it comes to phishing, knowledge is your best defence.

The growing number of these threats is more than alarming – email and mobile platforms are inundated. It’s an uncanny buffet of cyber risks ranging from Business Email Compromise (BEC), malicious links, dodgy attachments, sneaky QR codes, and even attacks driven by artificial intelligence. Phishing used to be much simpler, didn’t it? The tactics are getting wilier by the day, and it’s crucial we keep pace with these cyber rascals.

To give you a revealing snapshot, this one research project involved an enormous undertaking, scrutinising billions of these threats. The findings were most illuminating. They showcased just how quickly the phishing domain is evolving and spotlighted the main weapons of choice for these cyber scoundrels.

It’s like a modern Wild West, all this – we’re neck and neck with the bandits, trying to anticipate their every move. The more we understand, the better we’ll get at countering these threats and safeguarding our information and systems.

The landscape is certainly changing at an unnerving pace. We need to do our best to study and understand it, to take action before they strike. After all, we Brits aren’t afraid of a challenge, are we? So, let’s roll up our sleeves and tackle this head-on, because nothing, not even a swindling cybercriminal, should catch us off guard.

So, there you have it. Now, let me wrap this up before I babble too much, because this isn’t meant to cause panic, but to inspire readiness. In this rapidly changing world of cyber threats, being prepared is the name of the game. So, keep vigilant, stay informed, and remember that a little dash of good old British tenacity goes a long way. Until next time, then. Cheers!
