Cyberattacks plague health care. Critics call the federal response ‘inadequate’

The US healthcare system remains vulnerable to cyberattacks due to inadequate funding, regulatory restrictions and a fragmented approach to cybersecurity. Central Oregon Pathology Consultants experienced months of non-payment following a ransomware attack on Change Healthcare. Concerns have been raised about the lack of investment in security and overemphasis on protecting hospitals, leaving other parts of the healthcare chain exposed. There are calls for a broader investment in healthcare cybersecurity and for clearer roles and coordination among different administrative units.
