Coverage of Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Services

Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women across the US, with an estimated 4 million women living with the disease as of 2021. Screening services, which include mammography and genetic testing for high-risk women over 35, are covered by private insurance, as well as Medicaid and Medicare structures, under the Affordable Care Act and various state laws. These services are highly necessary as breast cancer makes up about 16% of all new cancer diagnoses in the US. Healthcare professionals recommend regular screening and the use of preventive medications for some women with elevated risk of breast cancer. Guidelines for these services continue to evolve and legal cases could impact coverage policies in the future.
