Could HHS information blocking rule have unintended consequences on data sharing and security?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has proposed new rules aimed at transforming how patient data is shared among healthcare providers and with patients. The proposed rules outline permissible business practices to avoid information blocking and require healthcare providers to share data more broadly. The Office for the National Coordinator of Health IT and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services are reviewing industry comments on the proposed rules. Healthcare organizations will need to adopt privacy and security policies that address specific risks and justify any restrictions on data access.
