Could GDPR scupper NHS plans for AI?

Artificial intelligence has the potential to save the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), but the use of personal data in AI algorithms raises concerns about compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Patients may expect to give consent for their data to be used in AI algorithms, but GDPR requires organizations to consider alternative legal bases for processing data. Transparency and explanation of algorithmic decision-making will also be important under the new regulations. Inclusive approaches to information governance and involving the public in data sharing discussions will be crucial for the successful implementation of AI in the NHS.
