Cost of hospital readmissions ‘disproportionally high’: study

A quarter of heart failure patients in Australian hospitals end up back in care within a month of discharge, costing AUD604m ($416m) in direct hospital charges, according to researchers from the University of Queensland. The cost of these readmissions is high, as patients are often admitted multiple times. Health economist Trang Dang, said the study highlighted the cost of potentially preventable hospital-acquired complications, and the cost to the health system.
