Common Skin Bacterium Acts Directly on Nerve Cells to Trigger Itching

Harvard Medical School scientists have shown for the first time that common skin bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, can trigger itching by reacting with nerve cells. The discovery could lead to new oral or topical treatments for consistent itching related to various microbial imbalances in the skin, such as those involved in conditions including atopic dermatitis.
