College student charged in connection with PowerSchool data breach

A 19-year-old student from Massachusetts, Matthew Lane, is facing up to 17 years in prison for hacking and extorting $2.85 million in Bitcoin from ed tech company PowerSchool in 2024. Lane accessed personal data of millions of students and teachers using stolen employee credentials, then transferred this data to a server in Ukraine. PowerSchool was reportedly unaware of the breach for over 100 days until Lane’s ransom demand.
