China’s Salt Typhoon hackers target telecom firms in Southeast Asia with new malware

Chinese state-sponsored hacker group Salt Typhoon is running a new cyber-espionage campaign, deploying a previously unseen backdoor called GhostSpider, targeting Southeast Asian telecom companies. Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro speculates separate actors within Salt Typhoon are assigned to specific industries and regions, given the group’s well-structured organization. GhostSpider’s modular design allows independent deployment or updates of modules, complicating detection and analysis.
