UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty admitted before Congress that his organization paid a $22m ransom to BlackCat hackers after a February ransomware attack on Change Healthcare. The attackers used compromised credentials to access the company’s portal and encrypted all its systems. Despite the payment, the data was not recovered and the damaging outcomes persist. An estimated 80% of clinicians lost revenue due to the breach and Change Healthcare reportedly lost $872m, with losses expected to top $1b.
