CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has announced that a phishing attack has potentially exposed the personal data of 6,800 patients. An employee fell victim to a phishing email, compromising their account. Although the hacker appears to have only used the account to send spam messages, unauthorized access could not be ruled out. Personal information, including names, member identification numbers, and dates of birth, was stored in the compromised account. Social Security numbers were included for eight members. CareFirst has offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all affected individuals.
