Cybersecurity experts from Cofense have found multiple phishing emails pretending to be the US Social Security Administration ahead of the 2024 US presidential elections. The emails aim to install a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) malware on recipients’ devices. The hackers exploited a legitimate software tool, ConnectWise, using it to break into victims’ systems, steal data and spread further malware. The campaign began around mid-September 2024, with email frequency rising shortly before the election.
