AT&T and Verizon Extortion Case Sees US Army Soldier Arrested – DataBreaches.Net

So, gather round everyone – I’ve got quite the tale for you today. You see, it all involves a bit of James Bond-style espionage, a touch of hacking dark arts, and yes, you guessed right – even the American military’s involved.

‘Tis a tale of a 20-year-old American soldier. Now this isn’t your run-of-the-mill, weapon-wielding infantryman; he was a communications specialist, no less, stationed in that far-off land of South Korea. His name is Cameron John Wagenius and, according to our story, he decided to moonlight as a cybercriminal under the rather flashy pseudonym, ‘Kiberphant0m’. A real Oliver Twist, don’t you think?

So what’s all the fuss about, you might ask? Well, our Cameron here was allegedly up to no good in the realm of cyber piracy. Story goes that he was purloining sensitive customer call records and then, would you believe it, had the audacity to flog them online. The records were nicked from American telecom giants AT&T and Verizon. I mean, if you’re going to be naughty, might as well do it in style, right?

Poor lad was caught, unsurprisingly I guess, near Fort Hood, Texas, back on the 20th of December. It seems old Saint Nick had an early lump of coal for Cameron. ‘Course it’s all legal and above-board; the lad got slapped with two criminal counts – specifically, the unlawful transfer of confidential phone records. The specifics aren’t all spelt out in the indictment, mind you. The document is scant on details about our protagonist and his misdeeds, but that’s justice for you – keeping it all suspenseful and mysterious till the very end!

If you’re wondering how we stumbled onto all this, here’s some inside info. Much of this tale comes from a good old chinwag with Cameron’s mum, Alicia Roen, a Minnesota native, who dished all the dirt on her not-so-prodigal son.

But alas, my dears, here’s where our story ends – for now, at least. So as we move on to other matters, let’s spare a thought for young Cameron and ponder over the strange, and often unwise, paths that youthful curiosity can lead us down. After all, everyone loves a good bit of drama, don’t they? As they say, all the world’s a stage, and Cameron, whether he likes it or not, has just become a very peculiar leading man.
