In a major cyber attack, Ascension, the largest nonprofit and Catholic healthcare system in the US, had its consumer health data compromised on 9 May. The attack affected its electronic health records system, MyChart, and other operational systems. Ascension engaged Google’s cybersecurity company, Mandiant, to investigate. Cyber gang Black Basta, known for ransomware double extortion attacks, was identified as the perpetrator. The incident is expected to have a significant impact on the healthcare sector and to influence future regulatory compliance discussions.
