Tech firms Apple and Google have come under fire for hosting VPN apps linked to sanctioned Chinese companies on their app stores. At least five VPNs are connected to Shanghai-listed Qihoo 360 – a company hit with sanctions by the US in 2020 over Chinese military links. A total of 20 of the 100 most downloaded VPN apps have undisclosed Chinese ownership. Apple has faced the brunt of the criticism due to its privacy standards claim.
