Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 Arrives on AWS With Improved Cybersecurity Capabilities

AWS has introduced Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 on Amazon Bedrock and the Claude Platform on AWS, bringing a new high-capability AI model to enterprise cloud environments.

Anthropic claims that Claude Opus 5 enhances capabilities in coding, document analysis, visual understanding, long-running agent tasks, and cybersecurity-related workflows.

This launch provides security teams with access to an advanced AI model while keeping workloads within the existing AWS infrastructure.

On Amazon Bedrock, Claude Opus 5 features zero data retention by default, meaning that the service does not store customer prompts and responses. This helps organizations meet their internal data governance requirements.

The model operates on Bedrock’s next-generation inference engine. Organizations can use regional AWS deployments to meet data residency requirements, scale inference workloads, and maintain control over authentication and access through AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM).

Claude Opus 5 on AWS

Claude Opus 5 is also available through the Claude Platform on AWS, which offers Anthropic’s native platform experience via the AWS Console, complete with AWS billing and authentication. Zero data retention is available upon request for this platform deployment.

One of the most significant updates for cybersecurity teams is Claude Opus 5’s enhanced cyber capabilities. AWS has indicated that the model improves upon Claude Opus 4.8 in areas related to coding and cybersecurity tasks.

These improvements can support defensive use cases such as reviewing source code for security vulnerabilities, analyzing suspicious scripts, summarizing incident reports, correlating threat intelligence, and providing remediation guidance.

According to AWS, the model is designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks over extended periods, which can help security operations teams create agentic workflows to investigate alerts, retrieve internal documentation, assess configuration changes, and generate structured reports.

However, organizations should continue to involve human review for high-impact decisions, especially when AI-generated outputs are used in vulnerability management, incident response, or cloud configuration changes.

Anthropic and AWS have also incorporated safeguards for higher-risk cybersecurity requests. In certain situations, Claude Opus 5 may revert to the previous Claude Opus 4.8 model.

Users will be notified when a fallback occurs, and API users can configure fallback behavior accordingly. This strategy aims to balance stronger cybersecurity assistance with safety controls for sensitive activities.

Developers can access Claude Opus 5 through the Amazon Bedrock Playground or programmatically via the Anthropic Messages API, the Bedrock Invoke API, and the Converse API.

Required IAM permissions include Bedrock: InvokeModel, Bedrock: InvokeModelWithResponseStream, and Bedrock: CreateInference.

The model identifier for Bedrock is global.anthropic.claude-opus-5. Developers can call it using the AWS SDK, AWS CLI, or Anthropic’s Bedrock-compatible SDK.

Claude Opus 5 also allows developers to add or remove tools during a conversation, enabling flexible AI agents without needing to resend an entire tool configuration.

Currently, Claude Opus 5 is available in select Amazon Bedrock Regions, including US East (N. Virginia), Asia Pacific (Melbourne), Europe (Ireland), and Europe (Stockholm).

AWS has stated that the Claude Platform on AWS is accessible across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

This release broadens the options for enterprises looking to utilize advanced AI for secure development, threat analysis, compliance operations, and security automation while retaining AWS-native governance and data controls.
