NHS England has seen a 257% rise in breaches of guidelines for mixed-sex hospital accommodations over the past six years, with over 120,000 incidents recorded. The regulations state that patients are not to share sleeping areas with patients of the opposite sex except in specified cases, or bathroom facilities. Advocates argue that the breaches put patient dignity and safety at risk, with a harmful impact on recovery. The true number of cases might be higher as data collection was suspended from March 2020 to September 2021 during the pandemic.
