A Windows filetype update may have complicated cyber threat detection efforts

Cybercriminals are increasingly using archive files to deliver malware, bypassing security protocols, according to a Cofense report. Since Microsoft extended support for additional formats like .rar and .7z, these have become more popular for malware campaigns. To counter this, businesses are advised to adopt a multi-layered defence strategy, educate employees to recognize suspicious files, restrict the use of certain archive formats, and equip Secure Email Gateways with advanced detection capabilities.
