A Record Number of Californians Are Visiting Emergency Rooms for Dog Bites

Dog bite incidents have increased significantly since the COVID-19 outbreak, revealing a public health concern in California. There were 48,596 emergency room visits due to dog bites in 2022, a 70% increase from 2005’s rate. Experts link this spike to un-socialized pandemic puppies turning into adults. Children and young adults most frequently require ER visits because of dog bites. Furthermore, dog bite injuries usually involve the head and neck, making small children particularly at risk.
