A new metric may provide insight into healthcare disparities

A study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health indicates potential racial sorting in US hospitals. The report reveals that around 80% of hospitals admit an uneven ratio of black Medicare patients aged 65 and over, compared to the total admitted in the hospital’s local market. The researchers developed this insight through a novel metric, the Local Hospital Segregation index. In areas with larger black populations, racial sorting was a common phenomenon.
