Researchers are returning to using phages, viruses that prey on bacteria, in the fight against bacterial infections, as bacterial resistance to antibiotics grows. “Phage steering”, a new strategy, sees the simultaneous use of phages and antibiotics to trap bacteria in an evolutionary bind they cannot overcome. Early laboratory tests have shown promise, prompting phage steering’s usage in personalized treatments in clinical settings with encouraging results. However, phage therapy’s one-host-specific nature, safety concerns, and impact on patient health from bacteria kill-off remain challenging issues.
