Maryal Concepcion, a Filipino doctor, uses her cultural upbringing’s collectivist values to inform her work as a direct primary care (DPC) doctor, focusing on social harmony and interconnectedness. Although she initially faced administrative barriers that threatened the full-scope care she wished to provide, she discovered that the DPC model aligned with her cultural values by prioritizing direct relationships with patients. She celebrates the Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month as it allows reflection on cultural roots and influences on society’s contributions.
